Signs and Symptoms

- Lower back pain
- Pain worse in the mornings
- Pain aggravated by sneezing, coughing or straining
- Tingling, numbness or pain radiations down the leg

Cause

Although the cause is due to the stresses and strains the individual has put on their spine, commonly poor posture and tight or shortened hip muscles predispose individuals to disc injuries.

Treatment and prognosis

Treatment first involves decreasing the inflammation locally (gentle movement and 10 minutes of icing the painful area at home can help patients through the inital most acute phase) then muscular techniques to release tension and restore the balance of force dissapation in the lower back and hips which is finely tuned to the individual's spine.

Recovery times can vary and are dependent on many factors but in general significant improvement should be noted within a month.
